Charpy impact testing for AH36, DH36 and EH36 plates

Specify temperature, energy, orientation, thickness band and specimen size together. A number such as 34 J is not a complete Charpy requirement.

What the category means

The A/D/E/F higher-strength categories are associated with 0/−20/−40/−60°C test temperatures in the referenced W11 tables. Energy requirements can change with strength level, thickness and longitudinal or transverse specimens. Some thin products or approved production routes have special provisions.

Review the actual certificate

Check the full-size or sub-size specimen declaration and the sampling location. Identify individual readings, the average and the applicable re-test conditions. Confirm that the certificate results correspond to the delivered plate and final supply condition.

Use in design

Charpy testing is a comparative notch-toughness acceptance test. It is not a direct fracture-toughness value, a fatigue-life prediction or an operating-temperature guarantee. Critical low-temperature designs may need additional fracture assessment and project-specific testing.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Can I specify −40°C for any hull location?

The design temperature, stress state, thickness, structural category and class rules govern selection. Obtain the designer’s approved requirement.
