Steel grade equivalence: how to use cross-reference handbooks

Treat a cross-reference as a starting point for comparison. Similar chemical composition or strength does not establish approved interchangeability for shipbuilding, pressure equipment or welded structures.

Compare product standards

Check the edition, product form, thickness scope, delivery condition, chemical limits and mechanical test requirements. Q345B, St52-3 and S355JR are often discussed together, but their designation systems and acceptance requirements differ.

Use historical references carefully

The supplied fourth-edition handbook includes GB 712—2011 chemistry tables. These are explicitly historical reference data on this site. The word latest in a file title does not establish that every reproduced standard is current or applicable to a new order.

Document the decision

Prepare a comparison matrix showing every required property and its evidence. Mark missing values as unresolved, retain the exact source and obtain the responsible engineer’s approval. Do not convert an approximate handbook match into a dual-certified product claim.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Why a handbook match is approximate

The supplied World Steel Designation Handbook explains in its December 1998 editorial notes that comparison criteria vary by family: chemistry is common, while low-alloy high-strength grades may be compared mainly by strength. An adjacent designation therefore does not prove identical chemistry, impact testing or approval. The supplied Practical Metal Materials Handbook is a 1999 edition and contains a GB 712—88 shipbuilding entry; those dates must remain attached to any historical comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Are ASTM and ASME grade names interchangeable?

Do not assume this from the prefix. Confirm the exact adopted material specification, edition and code acceptance for the project.
