General carbon structural steels used around marine projects

A36, A283 Grade C, Q235B, S235JR and SS400 are general structural designations. They should not be advertised as substitutes for class hull grades solely because their strength appears similar.

Application boundary

General structural material can serve non-classed supports, frames or other uses when the design permits it. The approved drawing controls the material. Hull-critical plate needs the required grade, testing and certification route.

Designation differences

ASTM, EN, GB and JIS standards use different product and test frameworks. Impact suffixes such as JR must be read under their own standard. A steelmaking grade name is not a complete guarantee of toughness at a project’s operating temperature.

Purchase checklist

Request the exact standard and edition, product form, dimensions, final delivery condition and inspection document. For a proposed substitute, compare chemistry, thickness-dependent properties, weldability and approval before ordering. Keep the original and proposed grades distinct in stock records.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Is ASTM A36 the same as AH36?

No. The similar spelling is misleading; these are different grade designations and acceptance frameworks.
