Nickel alloys for marine and industrial equipment

Nickel alloy selection is specific to corrosion, temperature, strength and fabrication requirements. Nickel-based alloys are not a single material with interchangeable properties.

Identify the alloy precisely

Use the UNS designation, product standard and final condition. Alloy 718 / UNS N07718 is a precipitation-strengthened nickel alloy; that does not make it the universal choice for seawater corrosion or every high-temperature component. Other nickel alloys have different strengthening and corrosion mechanisms.

Match the service

Compare the actual chemical environment, temperature, load and required life. Evaluate galvanic compatibility and welding details in mixed-material assemblies. A broad claim of excellent corrosion resistance without the test environment is not a purchasing criterion.

Release the material

Specify product form, dimensions, heat treatment, chemistry, mechanical tests and inspection documents. Heat treatment can materially change properties, so the certificate must describe the supplied condition. Do not apply plate data to pipe, forgings or castings without the correct specification.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Can nickel alloys be ordered only by trade name?

Add the UNS designation, product specification and condition to remove ambiguity. Verify any proposed equivalent through a documented comparison.
