GUIDE / MATERIAL REFERENCE

Offshore structural plate vs shipbuilding plate

Offshore and hull steels can share strength levels while following different standards, supplementary requirements and approval routes. Similar numbers in grade names do not establish equivalence.

Different design contexts

Offshore structures may specify additional fracture toughness, through-thickness properties, weldability or ultrasonic acceptance for highly restrained joints. Hull construction follows its approved vessel rules and structural categories. The project specification decides what is required.

Compare the complete specification

Check product form, thickness, yield band, impact category, delivery condition, chemistry, NDT and certificate route. Historical EN 10225 grade designations must be tied to their edition and current project acceptance. A marine-use description is not a standards cross-reference.

Approve substitutions

Present a side-by-side comparison with the proposed mill approval and certificate. Evaluate welding and fabrication implications as well as static strength. Obtain written engineering and inspection acceptance before changing the ordered material.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Can EH36 replace an EN 10225 offshore grade?

Not by name alone. The complete design specification and receiving authority must accept the substitution.
