GUIDE / MATERIAL REFERENCE

Hull plate fatigue, brittle fracture and structural assessment

Grade selection supports structural reliability, but fatigue life and brittle-fracture resistance require the complete welded detail, loading and inspection context.

Fatigue assessment

Load cycles, stress concentration, weld geometry, residual stress and corrosion influence fatigue damage. Increasing base-metal yield strength does not automatically raise the fatigue category of a welded detail. Use the approved structural assessment method for the vessel or offshore structure.

Fracture control

Thickness, temperature, stress state, defects and toughness interact. Charpy acceptance is useful material evidence, but it is not a direct prediction of crack growth or critical flaw size. Fracture-mechanics assessment may be required for critical or damaged details.

Through-life evidence

Link inspection intervals and repair criteria to the damage mechanism. Retain weld inspection, thickness surveys and loading history where available. Do not publish a fixed number of years as the service life of all ship plates.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hardness result prove fatigue life?

No. Hardness alone does not characterize the welded detail, crack population or cyclic loading history.
