Cold forming
Bend direction, plate thickness, edge finish, tooling and strain influence the risk of cracking. Check the mill’s guidance and qualified forming limits. Where strain is significant, the project may require additional testing or material approval after forming.
Hot forming and line heating
Temperature history can alter toughness and strength. This is especially relevant to TMCP plate, whose properties depend on the manufacturing route. Obtain permitted heating and cooling conditions rather than applying a generic workshop temperature to every grade.
Finished inspection
Measure shape, fairness, local buckling and thickness where relevant. Record any corrective heating and inspect suspected cracks by an appropriate method. Changes to structural geometry or repair method need the responsible engineering approval.
Information to record
- Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
- Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
- Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.
Frequently asked questions
Can heat treatment always restore a formed plate?
No. Restoration depends on chemistry, original processing route and an approved treatment and testing plan.
